Training
Information
And I would like to start off 2008 by thanking our new Director, Andre
Chaisson, for asking me to serve as the Old Town HOG (OTH) Chapter Training
Officer. Proud to have your confidence. I would also like to thank John
McKelvey, Bobby Moody, Cal Reimann, Rick Vincent, and the rest of the
Road Captains for their wise counsel. I am also really looking forward
to working with James, Mike Jenkins, and everyone in the Chapter on “training.”
Now some of you may be saying – “Ok, we got a training officer, so what?”
So I thought I’d post an overview of what I think this Training Officer
stuff is all about – here goes:
Responsible for planning and conducting all aspects of training as described
below (Training Events) and developing/refining chapter group riding procedures.
Records existing and develops new techniques and procedures in conjunction
with the Safety Officer and with the approval of the Head Road Captain.
Works closely with the Safety Officer developing material for the Safety
and Training Section of the Chapter Web Site.
Training Events
Welcome Wagon Ride
• Frequency: Monthly, as scheduled
• Purpose: Introduce new members to/refresh existing
members on OTH group riding procedures (note! Tain’t just for new members!)
Road
Captain (RC) Training / RC Rider Training
• Frequency: Four times a year, if required
• Purpose: ICW HRC, provides guidance to new RCs on RC
duties and re-sponsibilities; improve RC rider skills
Rider Skills Training
• Frequency: Twice a year (spring and fall)
• Purpose: Develop advanced control skills and increase
rider confidence
Now we are going to ease into this stuff --- it isn’t going to happen
all at once. Everything has to be thought out, laid out, certified, verified,
rectified, justified, and approved ? then it will be ready to roll out
to you. [I plan to have it all done by June, pending job-related travel!]
One
final thought ----- I consider this Chapter a professional outfit. And
what do professionals do? They study, intently, whatever it is they are
professionals at. So that’s my challenge to you: Challenge yourself by
learning something new about your Harley, your abilities, or just about
riding, in general. [If I could earn a living at it ---- that’s all I’d
do!]
Ride
safe and ride often. Oh, and ditto what James said, if you have a question,
comment, suggestion --- send it. Looking forward to a great 2008!
